What We Give

What we give, 

what we can offer 

what it really all comes down to 

is nothing 

Beyond what we ourselves have received

a welcoming smile

a reassuring nod 

a silent presence

a prayerful caress

a glass of water

sharing at future's end.

And we pray it is enough

for it is all we have

and it is enough, and

it is never enough for

all that we do, for all

that we hope we do

we never do

  enough or give 

  what is needed.

We can only share ourselves

our hearts and walk together

this holy road shoulders touching

And so we pray.

And so we give.

And so we are given.
